How SimNATO works

summary of crisis mechanics
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) real-world dynamics inspire Simulation NATO’s crisis format, which introduces unique mechanics and rules in each of NATO’s decision-making bodies.
Whether you’re an experienced Crisis Delegate or completely new to this crisis format, any confusion will be cleared up as you observe and engage with the new crisis mechanics. To assist with this, The SimNATO staff will recap each committee's unique mechanics during the first committee session to help delegates adjust to the rules and procedures.

Committees

Each committee in SimNATO works with its own set of powers and restrictions, which presents unconventional challenges when navigating and collaborating with other committees.
About the North Atlantic Council
NAC delegates are diplomats and ambassadors first and, hence, start by needing to fulfill the agendas of their Head of State. Delegates will receive their agenda from the dais team before the conference, and fulfilling agenda items will increase a delegate’s influence over their own country’s goals, eventually earning them the right to propose their own agendas.
Delegate Promotions
Fulfilling agenda items, or outstanding contributions during a crisis, will result in promotions in rank. Increased ranks will provide unique benefits on a crisis-by-crisis basis at the staff’s discretion.
After reaching the role of a Foreign Minister, a temporary promotion to the Secretary General of NATO will allow Delegates to briefly tour other Committees and make speeches.

About the Military Committee
MC works under the NAC and manages NATO's military aspects, including supplies and assets. Delegates will represent Commanders of regional militaries (one or more countries) to manage the execution of NAC’s defensive strategy, with particular attention to logistics and supplies. Furthermore, Commanders will individually manage the budget available to them through the regional militaries they are responsible for defending.
Delegate Promotions
Unique call-outs, analysis, and tactical thinking will result in medals and at the staff's discretion a promotion in rank. Increased ranks will provide unique benefits on a crisis-by-crisis basis at the staff’s discretion.
After reaching the role of a Supreme Allied Commander, a temporary promotion to the Chair the military Committee will allow Delegates guide their peers in a direction they see fit.

About NATO Partners
The Partners committee combines mechanics from NAC and MC, allowing delegates to manage their Country’s priorities, assets, and military strategy more freely. Delegates are also empowered to submit joint directives freely, allowing blocs to bypass the rest of the Committee or act independently when collaboration is ineffective.
Delegate Promotions
Delegates in NATO Partners will be promoted for their political creativity and effectiveness in how they improve their country's situation. Increased ranks will provide unique benefits on a crisis-by-crisis basis at the staff’s discretion.
After reaching the role of a Head of State, a temporary promotion will allow delegates the opportunity to participate in other Committees with the Staff's permission.

Crisis Procedure

The MUN procedure is the same at a high level.
Crisis Updates
Delegates can expect crisis updates during Committee Sessions. Every session will include economic updates reflecting a Country's new budget and occasionally include other updates expanding on the crisis topics to include the rest of the Simulated world.

Directives

There are four kinds of Directives:
  1. Public Directives: These are written and voted upon by the Committee, similar to resolution papers. They reflect official correspondence between Committees or key actions to be taken.
  2. Private Directives: These directives are just between you and the staff; they reflect letters to others in the simulated world, such as your Head of State.
  3. Joint Directives: These directives extend regular Private Directives and reflect to the staff a collaboration between two members without the involvement of the whole Committee.
  4. Purchase deals: These directives follow a unique format and represent purchasing military (or other specialized assets) from one state to another.
The North Atlantic Council can:
  1. Send public directives to MC as guidelines or requirements
  2. Send public directives to NATO Partners to request or coordinate collaboration initiatives
  3. Send private directives as letters to their Head of State
  4. When the opportunity arises, send private directives to their National Intelligence Agency
The Military Committee can:
  1. Send public directives to NAC as suggestions or requests
  2. Submit purchase deals to coordinate the purchases of military assets from countries exclusively within the allied sphere
  3. When the opportunity arises, send private directives to their National Intelligence Agency
NATO Partners can:
  1. Send public directives to NATO Partners to coordinate collaboration
  2. Send private or joint directives to NATO Partners to coordinate collaboration
  3. Submit purchase deals to coordinate the purchases of military assets from any country of their choosing
